How did the idea of starting a Digital Marketing Learning Place come to you?
The digital marketing spends have been growing worldwide at a rapid pace. In India, the total online advertising market was valued at INR 1,750 crores in FY 2011-12 and INR 2,260 crores in FY 2012-13. Projections say that digital spends will be INR 2,938 crores in FY 2013-14 (See Figure below).
This clearly shows a 40% year on year growth from 2010-11 to 2013-14. Anyone who sees the above numbers would say that the Digital industry has a lot to cheer about. But sadly, that’s not true!
The rate of skilled professionals joining the digital industry is far from the growth rate of the same. Most of the people who join the industry do so without any kind of training or experience in digital marketing, thereby putting the burden of training them on the organization that they join. What is worse, is that while the industry seems exciting with guaranteed growth, the lack of knowledge on Digital media is a deterrent to many who want to be a part of this growth story.
Marketing curricula in our academic system continues to be archaic. Educational Institutions that spend millions of rupees on the digital medium for student acquisition refuse to teach the same marketing methods to their own students. There limitations are understandable to a large extent. Digital is a rapidly changing medium and is best taught by people who practice it on a day-to-day basis. Academicians are, therefore, in most cases, ill-equipped to handle this subject. The sporadic guest sessions that they organize via Industry-connect programs are not worth mentioning here, because while they work well to excite the students to join the industry, they are by no means designed to equip them to do so.
