The recently concluded UEFA Euro 2016 held in France turned out to be one of the biggest sporting event in the world not only in terms of television viewership but also on social media.

Cricket has enjoyed being the sport of choice in India for decades but has been facing stiff competition from football as global superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr continue to popularise the sport among the Indian masses.

European football is much more popular compared to other sporting competitions such as the Copa America which was held simultaneously.

The UEFA Euro 2016 tournament garnered more than 500,000 mentions which were 8x more as compared to the Copa America event. The popularity of the Euro was bolstered by the presence of seasoned superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic alongside budding talents Gareth Bale and Paul Pogba among others who have a vast following in India.

Mumbai followed by Delhi were the most active towns on social media that generated approximately 50% of the buzz around the tournament with Cristiano Ronaldo being the most mentioned footballer on Indian social media.
