The emoji will be live from 3 PM IST on Thursday, 13th April to 8 AM IST on Monday, 17th April, 2017.

By using the hashtag #AmbedkarJayanti #अंबेडकरजयंती #DalitLivesMatter #JaiBhim #जयभीम when composing a Tweet, an emoji representing BR Ambedkar will appear after the hashtag in the sent Tweet.

Twitter India will also create a Twitter Moment to revisit B.R. Ambedkar's words to the Constituent Assembly in 1949, on what India must to do protect its democracy, in collaboration with a number of film and TV personalities including Anupam Kher, Madhur Bhandarkar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pia Bajpai.

Mahima Kaul (@misskaul), Head- Public, Policy and Government, Twitter India said, “Twitter in India is for the people, by the people and with the people. Twitter is the go-to platform for people to participate in live and ongoing conversations all over the world. Our emojis have provided a unique way to represent causes, significant cultural, religious or political occasions and social commentary. With a special emoji to commemorate #AmbedkarJayanti, we are thrilled to give users an interactive way to revive conversations about BR Ambedkar and his extraordinary contribution to the India we live in today. It is also part of Twitter’s efforts to elevate public discourse and empower people to reach across divides and build connections.”

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was a social reformer and politician. He is also known as the Father of Indian Constitution. Throughout his childhood, Ambedkar faced the stigmas of caste discrimination, which resulted in his efforts to eradicate social evils like untouchability and caste restrictions. He fought for the rights of the dalits and other socially backward classes. Ambedkar was appointed as India’s first Law Minister in the Cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru. He was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, in 1990. He is an inspiration to many today as a symbol against the caste system in India, an academic and juror, and is invoked often in public life.

Many civil society organizations and online collectives have organized Twitter campaigns and chats to discuss the legacy of B.R. Ambedkar on the platform. Follow the conversation using the hashtags.

Here’s how Indians across the country are remembering the Dalit leader using the special emoji:
