The time has come for Facebook to be declared a virtual continent in itself, considering the number of people that are on it. Mark Zuckerberg’s dream has now formed a community of more than 2 billion people and if you had any doubts about it, no this has never been done before!
The journey from a handful of universities to the farthest corners of the world has been going on for thirteen years and what a ride it has been. Perhaps the significant milestone may take a while to sink in as Founder and CEO shared the news with a short status update announcing that he now has 2 billion reasons to be happy through his Facebook Page.
Mike Nowak, Product Director and Guillermo Spiller, Product Manager write on Facebook’s official blog, “This wouldn’t have happened without the millions of smaller communities and individuals who are sharing and making meaningful contributions every day.”
Unveiling a new ‘Good Adds Up’ video for this very special occasion, Nowak and Spiller further write, “To show our appreciation for the many ways people support one another on Facebook, we will share several personalized experiences over the coming days.”
Visit this page to see your own personalized video, and you can also see the number of Heart reacts you have used this year, new friends you have made and more information about you through which Facebook intends to show how important you are to be a part of the community.
Moreover, Facebook users who use the Heart react, or wish someone a Happy Birthday or create a Group will see a celebratory message from Facebook expressing gratitude towards each user who has been an integral part of the now 2 billion strong community.
Today, Facebook is the biggest social networking platform followed by Google’s YouTube with 1.5 Billion, with Facebook owned WhatsApp and Messenger with 1.2 Billion each. Chinese social networking platform WeChat clocks in at 889 million users, with another Facebook owned platform, Instagram coming in with more than 700 million users. Twitter and Snapchat finish off the list with 328 million and 255 million users respectively. Statistics Source.
Josh Constine from TechCrunch attempts to decipher Facebook’s phenomenal growth, “Facebook’s growth the last half decade has been fueled by the developing world. The company has relentlessly optimized its app for cheap Android smartphones and low-bandwidth connections. It’s added 746 million users in Asia and the Rest of World region since hitting 1 billion users total. Meanwhile, it only added 41 million in the U.S. and Canada.”
“Thank you for being a part of our global community!” Kowak and Spiller sign off.
