On the occasion of the first anniversary of demonetization, Social Samosa takes a look at brands that leveraged demonetization successfully.
It has been one year since PM Modi announced the demonetization of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes, making the currency invalid to tackle the menace of black money, fake currency and corruption. In this one year, there were many industries who bore the brunt of demonetization, but it was a boon for the digital medium, as more and more brands focused on the online medium to market their brand.
A few brands acted right on time and jumped on the demonetization fever to engage with their consumers on social media. This strategy helped them grab eyeballs and create good recall among the audience.
While, there was panic among the audience, the sudden ban of notes came as a good news to the online wallet companies like Paytm, FreeCharge, MobiKwik, who took of advantage of the situation and advertised aggressively. In fact, it was Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Paytm Founder & CEO, who was the first one to act, within minutes of the announcement. Big Bazaar on the other hand took the opportunity and kept their stores open till 11:30 PM. Kishore Biyani, Founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Future Group also shared this news from his own Twitter handle.
The tonality of the communication among brands, during this time, was on the lines of don’t panic, pay online or through the wallets. Don’t rush to the ATMs and queue unnecessarily, go cashless.
