With the extensive smartphone penetration coupled with the internet revolution catalyzed by Jio, video consumption statistics have altered dramatically. While video content consumption grew by leaps and bounds, the patterns, preferences, and modes of consumption differ basis various parameters.

According to a report by KPMG, online video consumption in terms of average time spent per week grew 21 percent y-o-y in 2017. While Mobile was the most preferred device in watching online videos, other devices such as PC, tablet, and internet television witnessed a significant decline in average time spent per week.

Further, digital video consumption grew from being a ‘millennial tick’ as the audience in the older (35-55) demographic spent equal or more time watching videos online that the average time spent online video viewing. Small towns with population less than one lakh or 1-5 lakh exceeded metro cities and bigger towns by spending maximum time watching online video content.

Comedy clips (32 percent) and User Generated Content (26 percent) grabbed the biggest share of the pie in terms of genres consumed by the audiences.
