Facebook will confirm the identity and location of advertisers in India who want to run political ads, ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Advertisers attempting to run political ads related to the 2019 general elections will have to submit proof to confirm their identity and location by using their devices, the confirmation process might take a few weeks so the advertises can start the process of validation at the earliest using the updated version of the app or desktop site.
“It’s important that people know more about the ads they see — especially those that reference political figures, political parties, elections, and legislation. That’s why we’re making big changes to the way we manage these ads on Facebook and Instagram. By authorizing advertisers and bringing more transparency to ads, we can better defend against foreign interference in India’s elections”, said Facebook.

Facebook had seen a lot of fake news surfacing prior to Brazil elections, and US elections in 2016, despite their efforts, false reports still surface the platform although they have dropped in the recent years.
The number of internet users in India, have massively increased in the recent years with reduced data rates and simplification of usage has made everyone tech-savvy, providing a substantial reach to any emerging news on the platform.
Confirmation of identity and location was essential, such clarity is needed on the platform so that, the reports appearing are factual and do not have a negative influence on the society.
